What Should I Do About Spam Linking To My Site?

A site that has little to no value, but does link to other websites, is generally considered spam.

Bad SEO companies buy a domain name and start a site for the sole purpose of selling “100 links for $100!” or some other type of gimmicky marketing ploy.

The bad news is that Google could penalize your site if there are spammy links (a lot of them) that lead to your site.  Why?  How does Google know that you are not the one that put them there in an attempt to raise your site rankings?  Exactly.

To inform Google that you are DISAVOWING links from a specific domain or website, follow this procedure.

SEMRUSH has a toxic link score that can easily be viewed and those toxic URLs can be downloaded into Excel.

  • Download Toxic Sites from SEMRUSH to MS Excel
  • Manually review those sites to ensure the toxic score is justified (see below)
  • Run the sites through other 3rd party tools like Ahrefs, Majestic, Scrapebox, and others
  • Delete legitimate sites from the excel spreadsheet
  • Add all the remaining sites (toxic sites) to your disavow file (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/disavow-links-main)
  • Re-upload disavow file to Google’s disavow tool

Many people warn that solely trusting 3rd party websites like SEMRUSH or MOZ can be detrimental, however, that is why you should always conduct a manual review of all sites.

Questions that will help determine if a site is low quality are:

  • Is there real content on this site?
  • Are there too many ads?
  • Does this site have any links to it or is it an orphaned site just pumping out junk links?
  • How does this site score on other 3rd party sites like Moz, SEMRUSH, AHREFS, Majestic?
  • Does it look like the entire site is full of external links?

A Recent Example:

When we first decided to implement this system, there were over 1,200 toxic sites listed in SEMRUSH.

We manually checked all of them to ensure we did not blacklist a good website.

This process was easy but painstakingly boring.

  1. Copy URL
  2. Paste URL in Browser
  3. Hit Enter
  4. Look at 2 or 3 Pages of the site
  5. Determine if Spammy (If yes, keep url in excel – if not, delete from the list)
  6. Repeat

If you do this, however, Google can never penalize you for violating their Penguin Algorithm – well, almost never.
