Traditionally, Google has said that the Algorithms will add any meta tags that are missing in order to serve the searcher.
When I heard this I was immediately skeptical. Gary Iilyes discussed this on a webmaster roundtable in 2017, so I decided to test this on a very active bulletin board on one of the sites I work on.
The bulletin board was created from phpBB, but with many customizations. We struggled to implement high-quality Title tags and Meta Descriptions and the return on investment wouldn’t justify hours of developer time, so I experimented.
Title Tags and Meta Descriptions impact the ranking of a listing, but they also affect the Click-Through Rate. You want to optimize your Title tag to compel a person to click on your listing. That means if you let Google fill in the Title and Meta Description, they will replace that data with something that is relevant, but it may not be compelling.
