Website Audit: Photography Website
Grinkie Girls SEO Audit
Content Management System: Squarespace
Using Square Space is a nightmare for SEO, usually. There is little control over important aspects of a website which SquareSpace doesn’t allow webmasters and marketers to optimize. This is an important constraint when strategizing the complete optimization of a site.
However, there are a number of things you can do despite the content management system.
The Following Recommendations Should Be Implemented As Soon As Possible
- Optimize Images
- Serve Scaled Images
- Leverage browser caching
- Review How the Server is Caching the Site
The mobile speed according to Google is a 7/100
Image sizes are the biggest reason for the slow site speed.
This is the desktop speed, which is typically faster, but Google operates by Mobile speed, not desktop. Either way, images need to be optimized as well as every other recommendation on GTMetrix.com.
There are 71 pages on the site
The important elements of On-Page SEO, Usability, and Conversion:
- Title Tags
- Meta Descriptions
- H1 Tags
- Site Content (Descriptions)
- Calls to Action
- Image Size
- Image Names
- Alt Tags
- There are 41 Duplicate Title Tags.
This means Google recognizes (likely) that they are all the same page.
- There are 47 Missing Meta Descriptions
- 8 of the Meta Descriptions are exactly the same (Again, Google will recognize these as all the same pages)
- 16 of the Pages have missing H1 Tags
- 33 of the pages have duplicate H1 tags
- There are 56 missing H2 tags (subheads)
- 12 pages have duplicate H2 tags
The Pinup and Boudoir sections need to have text on those pages. Currently, there are only images.
There should also be Internal Linking happening on the site. You can learn about internal linking here:
There are 52 images on the site. 41 of the images are over 100KB
5 of the images are missing ALT tags (not too bad)
The site has 260 backlinks from 46 referring domains.
A good goal is to double this in the next 3 months. 600 links from 100 sites would do wonders for ranking and visibility.
There are a lot of links from Russia and out of the U.S.
There is no reason a Russian site should be interested in a photography studio in St. Paul Minnesota.
Those sites should be disavowed in the search console tool. You can research how to do this. “How to disavow toxic sites”
You can see in the image below that from 2013 until about March, 2018 there was a loss of pages linking to the site. Once the site structure gets fixed, I would concentrate on link building from relevant sites related to the beauty, fashion and photography industry including blogs, bulletin boards, news related sites, online magazines and more.
AHREFS recognizes these sites as competitors. It doesn’t mean local competition, just competition for the Genre.
Top 10 competitors (United States)
A Great Strategy is to acquire all the backlinks that lead to all these sites, then research which ones might also want to link to Grinkiegilrs.com.
Sometimes there are lists of photography studios, bulletin board posts and the like. Getting an amalgamation of all competitor backlinks and targeting those first is a good strategy and saves research time.
There is no section for Headshots or Professional Headshots.
You mentioned you wanted to advertise on LinkedIn, however, you should create an entire section for headshots with a good landing page.
Post great photos, add some text with internal linking and create a compelling Call To Action. Make sure you focus on Geographical location (not national) and focus on the following:
- Realtors (they always need to update their photos)
These are all professionals that need recent and professional photos. They also have co-workers that need professional headshots. Getting a doctor’s office with 3-10 people at a time will increase your ROI and you can provide group discounts – also on-location photography can be done when appropriate.
These recommendations should keep you busy for a while.
If you don’t mind posting a review about this audit, that would be great. I didn’t charge you for this and I spent about 120 minutes on it. Please take 5 minutes to help out a veteran-owned business.
